Gearbox Assembly & Disassembly Best Practices

In any industrial application, the proper assembly of Falk gearboxes is essential to the productivity and profitability of the company. Inevitably, there will be failures, but adopting a series of best practices to allow for minimum downtime for repair will allow your company to get back on track.

A failed Falk speed gearbox can create a disastrous outcome, but with the help of a highly trained repair specialist, you can get your operation back up and running in no time. Rush jobs and warranties are just two of the important services a trusted supplier and maintenance company should provide.

How to Assemble a Gearbox

It is best to get to know how to assemble a gearbox or to have a specialist on hand that you can call whenever a repair or refurbishment is necessary. Consider having an Falk gearbox specialist supplier of Falk gearbox parts that you can rely on to give you quality parts and even perform more complicated repairs should the need arise.

In the course of use, some Falk speed gearbox parts will no longer retain their original dimensions. In such cases, it is best to have references on hand that can help you determine what kind of fit was designed for that particular part.

First, measure the bore and shaft in multiple locations in the gearbox, using the smallest diameter bore and the largest diameter bore. Then, the expected fit range can be calculated. You can get one of three results from the calculation:

  1. A positive value means that the fit is clearance.
  2. A negative value means the fit is interference.
  3. If the value is zero, the parts should slide together, but may require a small amount of force for assembly.

The different types of fits determine what repairs will be needed, and how easy it is to repair. Work with a Falk gearbox specialist to determine the best practices your particular operation needs in order to ensure that your gearbox parts are properly installed.

Heating gearbox assembly parts can be done via several methods, from induction heaters to a hot oil bath. What is most important, no matter the technique used, be sure to maintain thorough heating and a consistent temperature. The method you use should be based on the part and the timeline of repair. Cooling can be done with liquid nitrogen, dry ice, or a freezer. Similarly to heating, being consistent in thoroughness and temperature is important. Condensation presents another problem and can be avoided by wiping down parts with isopropyl alcohol.

Best Practices for Disassembling a Gearbox

The most common method used by Falk gearbox specialists in disassembling a gearbox is using a mechanical press. The press will allow you to separate parts, but comes with some precautions: namely to be aware of the large forces involved in the press process. Make sure that the press is sized appropriately for the job and applies the correct amount of force needed to disassemble the gearbox.

Pullers are another way of disassembling a gearbox, in which the parts are pulled apart through either mechanical or hydraulic action. A jaw-type puller can be used anywhere that you can get the jaws around the gearbox part.

Some gearbox parts also have removal taps, which are located in the part so that bolts can be inserted to push the two components apart. You can also use heating or cooling methods similar to how to assemble a gearbox to disassemble the gearbox.
