Extending the Life of Your Gear Reducers

Your machinery is an investment in your business. By taking care of your FALK gear reducer, you’ll extend its life and cut down on repair costs.

Gear Reducer Maintenance

  1. Select the right kind of lubrication. The wrong type of lubrication is one of the top reasons that gearboxes fail. Lubricant types are either synthetic or mineral-based. After knowing the correct type to use, follow the manufacturer’s suggestions regarding items like lubricant viscosity, viscosity index, pour point and additives.
  2. Know the life span and limits of the oil you chose. Lubricants oxidize and break down with time. Starting and stopping a reducer can lead to varnish deposits and sludge. By knowing the frequency in which to change the lubricant (generally every 2,500 hours under normal operating conditions) and the limitations of the products, you can reduce unnecessary wear and tear. Limitations to consider include temperature, the environment and ambient conditions of the FALK gear reducer and the machinery’s loads.
  3. Perform regular maintenance. Maintaining a gear reducer includes checking oil levels when the machinery is cool, cleaning the gearbox, making sure the surrounding environment is optimal and examining the wear of the machinery’s moving parts.
