Falk T Coupling: How to Get Maximum Life

How you install your Falk T couplings will have a big impact on their performance and longevity. A poor or sloppy installation will send your coupling to its early grave, so it’s critical to carefully follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Hub Installation for T Couplings

A Falk T coupling will have hubs designed for either clearance fit (smaller sizes) or interference fit (larger sizes). The primary difference during installation is that interference fit hubs must be heated to 275 degrees Fahrenheit before mounting, whereas clearance fit hubs should not be heated. If your T coupling hubs do require heating, don’t heat them beyond 400 degrees Fahrenheit or you risk seal damage, and make sure you use proper heating techniques (oven, torch, induction heater or oil bath) to avoid compromising the materials. Additionally:

  • Mount heated hubs as quickly as possible, and allow them to cool before continuing.
  • If the hubs do not require heating, clean all parts with a non-flammable solvent before installing.
  • Do not hammer hubs in place, as this can damage the bearings.

Ensuring Proper Coupling Alignment

A misaligned T coupling isn’t just bad for the coupling itself – it also causes wear and tear on the entire system and is one of the common causes of gearbox failure. At minimum, use a spacer bar, straight edge and feelers to test both gap and angular alignment. For precision alignment, Falk recommends using an alignment computer to simplify the process. (Dial indicators, lasers and graphical analysis are also effective tools for ensuring proper positioning of your T couplings.)

When properly installed and maintained, Falk T couplings provide a long life of service even under extreme conditions.
