Your marine operation’s success depends on marine hardware suppliers that can keep your vessels and port facilities stocked with items such as valves, fluid sealing products, Falk gearboxes, deck machinery and mooring. Since 1947, the marine industry has depended on Mar-Dustrial for fast and affordable replacement parts that keep operations sailing smoothly. As one of only three factory-authorized Falk RENEW repair facilities in the U.S., we also rebuild Falk gear assemblies and restore failed speed drives to like-new condition with quick turnaround times to keep you productive.

Deck Machinery and Mooring at Mar-Dustrial

  • Winches: Winches make handling ropes and wires on a boat simpler by spooling it on a drum with the help of an electric or hydraulic motor. Because winches are most commonly used for mooring, they’re often found on the fore and aft decks of a ship, on either side. The type of drive used depends on the application. Even when maintained well, equipment failures can occur because of exposure to harsh conditions. As marine winch suppliers, Mar-Dustrial helps you save time and money on your marine equipment replacements.
  • Capstans: A vertical-axeled rotating machine, a capstan multiplies the pulling force of sailors hauling hawsers, cables and ropes. Early capstans were human-powered and rudimentary ratchets provided tension. Today, a capstan might be powered pneumatically, electrically, hydraulically, or with an internal combustion engine. The machinery has a Falk gearbox to reduce speeds and increase torque.
  • Weather-tight doors: Located above a vessel’s waterline, weather-tight doors prevent outside water from entering internal compartments and cabins. The doors open outward (instead of sideways or upward) to ensure positive pressure in the event there is a draught of water.
  • Hatches: Hatch covers prevent the ingress of water into cargo holds. The covers also protect a ship’s internal structures by blocking green water loads in times of extreme weather. There are a variety of hatch cover types, including those that fold, lift, slide, stack and roll.
  • Bitts: Bitts are dual bollards, or posts, that hold mooring lines, fire wires or tug lines from other vessels during STS operations.
  • Torque converter: Torque converters are specialized fluid couplings that allow for sudden stops and starts, as well as variable speed operation. Because the fluid is sealed within the coupling, it offers gear reductions, transmits power and absorbs torque. The device contains a pump and turbine on either side of a stator.

Falk Gear Maintenance Suggestions

In addition to being a marine hardware supplier, Mar-Dustrial supplies the maritime industry with Falk gearboxes, power transmission components, and speedy repair services. While gearbox repairs are inevitable, there are steps you can take to keep them in shipshape:

  • Follow maintenance schedules: Falk gears need regular maintenance and inspections to catch small problems before they turn into big headaches.
  • Keep cleanliness in mind: Marine operations can be wet and dirty. The grime that builds up on power transmission systems can contaminate the equipment and reduce its lifespan. Prevention is as simple as routine cleaning.
  • Maintain lubrication guidelines: Each power transmission system has unique lubrication needs, making it important to complete oil changes as recommended by the manufacturer. An oil change is a good time to perform an oil sample analysis to reveal potential problems.
  • Mind the vibration: A change in vibration can point to the breakdown of internal parts or misalignments. A regular vibration analysis with harmonics data can alert you to the warning signs.
  • Look for signs of wear: A maintenance routine should include a visual inspection of couplings, ball bearings, gear teeth and other wearable parts. Be on the lookout for flaking, cracking, fatigue and other signs of damage.
